What is a CT meter?

CT (Current Transformer) Meters are installed on any connections with a load greater than 100 Amps. Conventional meters cannot be used to measure current for these larger connections as they would simply have to be too large to be practicable. A CT meter only measures a fraction of the current passing through the connection and a multiplier is applied to this reading to reflect the actual current.

How do I read my meter?

You might want to read your meter to check how much power you are using. If you have a renewable energy panel installed you might want to see how much electricity you have fed back to the network.

Why do I need to give Horizon Power access to my meter? I have a dog/locked gates.

If you choose to have your power supplied by us, you agree to give our authorised personnel access to any electrical infrastructure on your property, up to and including the point of supply (normally the meter box). Not only is this a legal requirement, it also ensures the safety and reliability of your power supply.

Do I need to engage an electrical contractor to reconnect my property after disconnection?

In accordance with the requirements of the Electricity Act 1947, Horizon Power requires a licenced electrical contractor to ensure the property is safe for reconnection, if it has been disconnected for six months or longer.

How long does the new meter take to be ready for reconnection after a new account is opened?

It will take up to three hours from when a customer rings up to open a new account or to pay an overdue bill after disconnection, before an advanced meter can be re-energised.

Do I still need to leave a note in the meter box about the safety switch being off before the power can be reconnected?

A note will not be required to be left in the meter box in order for the new advanced meters to be reconnected.

My meter box is locked. Who holds the key to the meter box?

Your landlord, property manager and/or or strata body will hold the key to your meter box.

How do I reconnect my meter?

If you are moving in to a residence or out of your existing home or business you will be required to contact Horizon Power to advise us that you will need to have power connected or disconnected.

What are Residual Current Devices?

A residual current device (RCD) is a safety switch that helps protect you and your family. When an RCD detects a problem with your power supply, it switches the power off within 10 to 50 milliseconds to prevent electric shock.

Why do I need to lock my meter box?

Your meter box holds several electrical components including the meter, main switch, fuses, and circuit breakers, which control the flow of electricity into your home. For safety reasons it is recommended that all meter boxes be fully secure.
